Organ Failure is becoming a great problem now a days and can be tackled only by Organ Transplants. In India there is a growing need of Organ and Tissue Transplant due to large number of organ failures. Every year approximately 2,50,000 patients need Kidney, 80,000 need Liver and 50,000 need Heart Transplant in India and approx. 16 - 17000 organ transplants are done annually, leaving majority of the patients without organs.
The only way forward is to promote Organ Donations and save precious lives and benefit society at large. By increasing awareness, educating the public, and improving the donation process, we can make organ and tissue donation more accessible.
For the very purpose Government of India under the aegis of Department of Health & Family Welfare has formed National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) in 2014, Regional Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO) and State Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) to improve and provide more equitable access to organs and also to promote Deceased (Brain Stem Death) donations, which currently form a minuscule fraction of all Organ Transplants carried out in India.
In 2023, for the first time India achieved a milestone by surpassing 1,000 deceased donors (Brain Stem/Coronary Death) in a single year. Each cadaver donor typically contributes three organs, benefiting around 2,800 to 3,000 patients with end-stage organ failure.
Amongst all states Telangana led the way with 200 donations, followed by Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Gujarat whereas states in North has very minuscule contribution in Deceased Donor Programme.
